and yet does not keep a tight
rein on her tongue,
she deceives herself
and her "religion" is worthless.
"Religion" that God our Father accepts
as pure and faultless is this:
to look after orphans
and widows in their distress
and to keep oneself
from being polluted by the world."
Think about this
James is saying
if I don't control my tongue
the rest of my "religious" life
is worthless!
Then he says "pure religion"
keeps away from worldly practices,
and instead cares for those
who are distressed or are depressed.
We have opportunities all around us.
