Proverbs 22

"A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Rich and poor have this in common;
The Lord is the Maker of them all.

Humility and the fear of the Lord
bring wealth and honor and life.

Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.

The rich rule over the poor,
and the borrower is servant to the lender.

A generous man will himself be blessed,
for he share his food with the poor.

He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious
will have the king for his friend.

Folly is bound up in the heart of a child,
but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him."

The Heart of a Child &
Wealth, Honor & Life

Solomon includes wisdom regarding the training of children in the same chapter that he includes the value of a good name, humility,fear of the Lord, generosity to the poor, a pure heart & gracious speech.

Young children often do foolish and senseless things simply because they don't understand the consequences. Wisdom and common sense are not transferred by just being a good example. The wisdom a child learns must be taught consciously. Just as God trains and corrects us to make us better, so parents must discipline their children to make them learn the difference between right and wrong. Yes that means using a rod correctly, if necessary.
